Portland Timbers II edged through in MLS Next Pro after a goalless draw with Los Angeles FC 2, winning the penalty shootout 8-7. There was no separating the sides over the 90 minutes, leaving the tie to be settled from the spot.
LAFC 2 did much of the attacking but couldn't find a way past the Portland goalkeeper. The game's only significant moments were two bookings: Eric Izoita was cautioned in the 56th minute and Giuliano Fravolini Whitchurch followed in the 89th, before the shootout decided the outcome.
The visitors dominated the numbers, with 56% possession and 13 shots to Portland's 8, and they also created both of the game's two big chances. But Portland's keeper made five saves to keep it level, and Timbers II held their nerve from the spot to get the win.
