Cervantes opened the scoring for Portland in the 41st minute. Eric Preston equalised from Julian Placias' assist on the stroke of half-time, then scored again in the 60th minute, Gabriel Arnold assisting, to make it 2-1. Cervantes restored parity in the 67th minute to send the tie to penalties.
LA Galaxy II dominated possession, with 64% and 494 accurate passes to Portland's 243, yet Portland created the better openings, recording 5 shots to 4, two big chances to one and an expected goals figure of 1.84 to 0.77.
