Jakub Mensik beat Shintaro Mochizuki 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 at the US Open. Mensik seized control early, broke twice in the opener and then converted the only break of the second set at 3-2 to move two sets up.
The third set was tighter, with both players trading breaks. Mochizuki replied after Mensik's opening break, levelling at 2-2 and 3-3, and again at 5-5 after Mensik had moved in front 5-4. The decisive moment came in game 11, when Mensik broke at 6-5 to seal the match.
Mensik hit three aces, while Mochizuki did not record one. The difference in the end was Mensik's timing, breaking in game 11 of a back-and-forth deciding set.
