Gauff broke in the second and fourth games to race 4-0 up, and although Pegula pulled a break back at 5-2, Gauff broke again to seal the first set. She repeated the early break in the second set at 2-0; Pegula's break at 5-4 briefly gave her hope, but Gauff broke back to close the match 6-4.
The key stat in the opener was Gauff's first serve: she won 62% of points behind it and converted three of four break chances, while Pegula won just 42% on first serve and saved only one of four break points she faced.
