Standard Liège looked to have wrapped up the points when Adnane Abid scored his second on 65 minutes to make it 3-1, but KV Mechelen produced a stunning late rally. Two goals in the 89th and 90th minutes, both from Myron Van Brederode, turned the game on its head and rescued a 3-3 draw.
Standard went ahead in the ninth minute when Bernard Nguene finished off Marlon Fossey's assist, and Abid doubled the lead on 24 from Casper Nielsen's pass. Thérence Koudou pulled one back for Mechelen on the stroke of half-time, assisted by Malcolm Lohunanu-Mbasi, but Abid's second – again set up by Nielsen – restored the two-goal cushion. Van Brederode then struck twice in the closing stages to complete the comeback.
The numbers show Mechelen had the better of the play – 52% possession, 19 shots to 16 and an expected-goals tally of 2.75 against Standard's 1.64 – yet they were staring at defeat until the 89th minute. They converted all three of their big chances while Standard managed only one, and it was that ruthlessness in the final moments that made the difference.
