Norrie C. vs Shapovalov D. Prediction by Liza Hysong

Norrie C.

Cameron Norrie arrives in a rough patch of form. The British left-hander has lost most of his recent outings and, more importantly, the way he is losing them is worrying. He is not holding serve under pressure and is barely threatening on return. Against Zverev at the start of October he failed to earn a single break point in two sets, winning only 16 return points in the whole match, and his second-serve numbers (50% of points won) left him constantly on the back foot. The pattern repeats: against Fils he converted zero break points and won just 22% of first-serve return points, while against Van Assche he piled up 36 unforced errors, 26 of them off the forehand. His serve offers very little free help either, with only three to five aces per match and low first-strike percentages. There are positives: Norrie is still a stubborn defender who can grind out long matches, and his break-point saving is often strong (12/14 against Zverev, 4/5 in the Prizmic match). The 2-1 win over Prizmic, where he saved 80% of break points and converted three, showed he is still dangerous when the rallies get long. But he is losing too many short points and is not winning enough free points behind his delivery.
Shapovalov D.

Shapovalov D.

Denis Shapovalov comes in with much better momentum and far more weapons working. The Canadian has strung together solid wins over Shimabukuro and Tabilo and pushed Hurkacz to three sets in a tight contest. His serve is the main difference: he has been hitting double figures in aces almost every match (13 against Hurkacz, 14 against Mannarino, 11 against Shimabukuro), which gives him easy points and keeps his service games short. Against Shimabukuro he was clinical, winning 74% of first-serve points, converting four break points and reeling off seven games in a row. The comfortable 2-0 win there was his cleanest performance of the run. The clear weakness is consistency on the second ball: he served nine double faults against Mannarino and still fights with his second-serve points won, which has hovered around 50%. His loss to Alcaraz was a rough one, with just one ace and 24% of second-serve points won, but the level across the rest of the stretch has been high and he has been winning the big moments on his own serve, including 4/4 break points saved against Mannarino.
