Kai Wehnelt beat Matej Vrbensky 7-5, 6-2 in Szczecin, converting four of his break points to his opponent's two and holding eight of nine service games. Vrbensky saved only two of six break points he faced, and that gap on the big points decided the match.
Vrbensky broke at the very start of the opening set, at 1-0, but Wehnelt struck straight back in the second game for 1-1, and the set stayed on serve until he broke again in game 12 to take it 7-5. In the second set Wehnelt broke early for 0-2 and again for 1-5; Vrbensky pulled one back at 2-5, only for Wehnelt to break once more in game eight to close it out 6-2.
The serve numbers tell the story: Wehnelt won 40 service points to Vrbensky's 28 and landed 63% of first serves against 56%. In the second set Vrbensky won nothing behind his second delivery, 0 of 6, while Wehnelt took every one of the six second-serve return points he faced.
