Jakub Mensik beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5 in Montreal, winning on the strength of his serve and two decisive breaks. He fired 13 aces to his opponent's one and converted both of his break chances.
Mensik edged the opener by breaking in game 10. Van de Zandschulp then broke for 5-4 in the second set and served for it, but Mensik broke straight back at 5-5 before another break in game 12 sealed the match.
Mensik's serving was the standout factor: he won 81% of first-serve points and held 10 of 11 service games. He also saved one of the two break points he faced and finished ahead on total points, 67 to 57.
