Trungelliti beat Shang 0-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the US Open, coming from 2-1 down in sets. Shang had the better aggregate numbers - seven breaks to three and 49 return points to 34 - but Trungelliti was better when it mattered. His break-point defence made the difference.
Shang raced through the first set, breaking in games 1, 3 and 5 for 6-0. Trungelliti answered in the second: he broke in game four, while Shang broke to make it 4-5 and then 6-5; Trungelliti broke to make it 6-6 and took the tie-break. After Shang cruised through the third with two breaks, Trungelliti converted the only break of the fourth and broke in the first game of the decider.
The standout number was 10 of 17: Trungelliti saved 10 of the 17 break points he faced, while Shang saved only two of five. Trungelliti converted just three breaks all match, yet the last two delivered the fourth and fifth sets.
