Gimnasia y Esgrima claimed a surprise 1-0 victory over River Plate in the Superliga, with a late goal from Alexis Steimbach proving decisive. River dominated possession with 74% of the ball, but Gimnasia created the clearer chances and took one when it mattered.
The only goal arrived in the 80th minute when Maximiliano Zalazar set up Steimbach to finish calmly. River struggled to turn their territorial advantage into opportunities, managing no big chances compared to Gimnasia’s four, and were unable to beat the home goalkeeper in three shots on target.
Despite seeing only 26% of the ball, Gimnasia had 14 total shots to River’s 10 and an expected goals tally of 1.94 against River’s 0.30. They also forced three saves from the River goalkeeper while making one of their own. Three yellow cards were shown, to Lucas Silva, Nicolás Otamendi, and Maximiliano Zalazar.
