Naomi Osaka defeated Anastasia Zakharova 7-6, 7-6 at the US Open, taking both sets in tie-breaks. The match was decided by Osaka's serving: she finished with 10 aces, nine of them in the second set, and won 74% of points behind her first serve.
Osaka broke early in the first set to lead 1-0 and 3-0, but Zakharova fought back, levelling at 5-5 before Osaka won the tie-break. The second set followed a similar script: Zakharova broke for 0-1, Osaka answered for 1-1, and after Osaka moved ahead 4-2 and 5-3, Zakharova twice erased the deficit and even led 5-6. Osaka broke for 6-6 and then closed out the tie-break.
Osaka's 10 aces were the standout number, with Zakharova failing to register one. Osaka also won 29 of 39 first-serve points (74%) to Zakharova's 25 of 40 (63%), while Zakharova took only 10 of 39 points (25%) returning Osaka's first serve. She still matched Osaka's eight service games won, but the tie-breaks went Osaka's way.
