Newport had led from the 71st minute, when Yahya Bamba finished after Shaquille Gwengwe's assist. Wimbledon pushed for an equaliser and finally got it in the 90th minute, Callum Maycock scoring from Isaac Ogundere's assist to make it 1-1 and force penalties.
Wimbledon controlled the contest, holding 61% possession and managing 15 shots to Newport's 14, with five on target to four. Both goalkeepers made three saves, and the expected-goals figure of 0.00 for each side showed how little clear-cut quality was created before the shootout decided it.
