Federico Bondioli came from a set down to beat Sumit Nagal 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round at Cordenons. After being outplayed in the opener, where Nagal converted two of five break chances and dropped just one point on his first serve, Bondioli turned the match around by winning the second-set tiebreak-less decider and then outlasting his opponent in the final set.
Nagal dominated the first set, breaking Bondioli at 2-0 and 5-1, and saving both break points he faced. Bondioli raised his level in the second, saving the only break point he faced and breaking Nagal in the 12th game at 5-7 to level the match. In the decider, Bondioli broke early for 2-0, Nagal broke back at 3-4, but Bondioli immediately broke again at 3-5 and served it out.
Despite winning fewer first-serve points (42/64, 66%) than Nagal (47/66, 71%), Bondioli converted two of six break points and saved 4/7 (57%) overall, including a perfect 1/1 in the second set. He also committed no double faults, while Nagal had three.
