Pittsburgh needed overtime to salvage a game it had largely put away, beating Montréal 6-5 on Thomas Novak's unassisted winner at 62 minutes. A four-goal second period built the cushion; a three-goal third from the Canadiens erased it.
Cole Caufield opened at 4 minutes off a Lane Hutson feed before Evgeni Malkin tied it at 15, and it was 1-1 after 20. The middle frame belonged to the Penguins — Declan Carlile (21), Samuel Girard (28), Thomas Novak (35) and Ben Kindel (36) made it 5-1 before Nick Suzuki answered at 39 for 5-2 after two. The turn came late: Caufield again at 44, Chris Kreider at 59 and Ivan Demidov at 60 pulled Montréal level at 5-5.
Novak's two goals, including the overtime winner, were the difference. Hutson assisted on three Montréal goals — Caufield's opener, Suzuki's and Demidov's equalizer — and Caufield finished with two.
