SaiPa Lappeenranta took a 3-1 win in Graz, built on a second period that broke the game open. The Finns scored twice in a five-minute stretch to go up 0-3 and never had to defend a tie.
Saku Salminen opened it unassisted in the ninth minute, and after a first period that ended 0-1, Janne Naukkarinen converted Juuso Heikkilä's feed at 30 minutes. Petr Fridrich made it 0-3 at the 35-minute mark, off a pass from Aarne Intonen, and that was the turning point — Graz needed three goals from there.
Nick Swaney answered at 41 minutes, with Chris Collins credited on the assist, the only puck Graz got past SaiPa all night. Three different SaiPa scorers, two of them assisted, and a 0-2 edge in period two did the rest.
