Zhang broke first in the opener at 3-3, but Fernandez answered with a break of her own and took the set 6-3. In the second, Fernandez broke in game one and again at 2-5; Zhang's reply at 1-2 only delayed the finish as Fernandez closed out the match 6-2.
The match turned on Fernandez's first serve. She won 76 percent of points behind it and did not drop a service game, while Zhang won only 60 percent behind her first delivery.
