Charlton Athletic won 3-1 at Cheltenham Town in the EFL Cup first round. The visitors took control early, racing into a three-goal lead inside 37 minutes and then holding off a second-half reply.
Matt Godden opened the scoring in the 22nd minute from Sonny Carey's assist, and Carey doubled the lead two minutes later with Nathaniel Chalobah providing the pass. Tyreece Campbell made it 3-0 in the 37th minute, with Conor Coventry the provider. George Miller pulled one back for Cheltenham in the 55th minute, assisted by Joseph Tomlinson, but the home side could not get any closer.
Charlton dominated the shot count, registering 16 attempts to Cheltenham's seven, and had nine on target to two. Cheltenham's goalkeeper made six saves, which helped keep the scoreline down. Sonny Carey was central to the early damage, scoring once and assisting the first goal.
