The only goal of the match arrived in the 72nd minute when Francisco González scored for O'Higgins. Boca had more of the ball with 52% possession and took as many shots as their hosts, but they could not find an equaliser. The match ended 1-0, and the penalty shootout followed, with Boca winning 4-3.
O'Higgins were the more dangerous side, with five shots on target to Boca's two and a higher expected-goals figure (1.01 to 0.83). Yet they only had González's goal to show for it, and Boca's goalkeeper made four saves to keep his side in it before the shootout.
