Hertha BSC progressed to the second round of the DFB Pokal by beating 1. FC Saarbrücken 4-2 on penalties after the tie finished 1-1. Paul Seguin's opener was cancelled out by Philip Fahrner's 90th-minute equaliser, and Hertha held their nerve from the spot.
Seguin put the visitors ahead in the 69th minute, and Hertha looked comfortable as they dominated possession. But Saarbrücken forced extra time with Fahrner's goal in the final minute of regulation. Neither side could find a decisive goal in added time, so the tie went to penalties.
Hertha dominated the underlying numbers: 63 per cent possession, 33 shots to seven, nine on target to two. Saarbrücken's eight goalkeeper saves kept the tie alive, and Hertha missed all three of their big chances. Despite that, Hertha needed penalties to get through.
