Tamara Zidanšek defeated Petra Marčinko 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round of the WTA Iasi, using superior returning on second serves to break the Croatian five times. The Slovenian converted 5 of 10 break points while saving 4 of 7, despite committing seven double faults.
The first set featured six breaks in nine games: Zidanšek broke immediately, Marčinko levelled at 1-1, then Zidanšek reeled off two more breaks for 3-2 and 5-2. Marčinko broke back at 5-3, but Zidanšek sealed the set with a sixth break at 6-3. In the second set, Marčinko broke first for 0-1, Zidanšek broke straight back. The set stayed on serve until the 12th game, where Zidanšek broke to love to take it 7-5.
Zidanšek's second-serve returning proved decisive: she won 73% of points on Marčinko's second delivery (19/26) and 54% of her own second-serve points. Marčinko, despite landing 68% of first serves, managed only 27% on second-serve points won and no aces across the match.
