P. Iatcenko came from a set down to beat R. Zarazúa 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 at the US Open, leaning on her return game in a tight decider. The winner converted four break points and won 49 receiving points to 41, while Zarazúa was marginally better on serve – 73% first serves in and 11 break points saved.
Zarazúa twice broke in the opening set – games three and seven – to take it 6-4. Iatcenko levelled, breaking in game six and again in game ten of the second set. In the decider, Zarazúa's early breaks in games one, three and five gave her a 5-3 lead, but Iatcenko broke back in games six and eight, and after Zarazúa levelled at 6-6, the tiebreak went Iatcenko's way.
The key was Iatcenko's returning: she won 49 receiving points to Zarazúa's 41 and converted four breaks. Zarazúa's serve numbers were strong – 73% first serves, 12 of 16 service games held – but that was not enough to stop Iatcenko's three-set comeback.
