D. Yevseyev beat N. Larwig 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 in Hamburg, taking a seesaw contest settled by his serving consistency. He finished with 92% of first serves in play (97/105) and edged service points won 65-60, although Larwig hit three aces to his none.
Yevseyev broke in the first game of the opening set, Larwig hit back at 3-3, and Yevseyev took the tie-break. Larwig controlled the second set with breaks at 0-1 and 1-4, before Yevseyev pulled one back at 3-5. In the decider, Larwig broke at 0-1, Yevseyev levelled at 4-4 and 5-5, then closed it out at 7-5.
Larwig converted five of his 11 break points and Yevseyev four of eight, but the difference was reliability under pressure. Yevseyev saved three of eight break points faced, kept his double faults to one, and rode his first-serve dominance through the deciding set.
