Kudermetova P. defeated Yamaguchi M. 7-6, 6-4 to advance in Washington. The Russian recovered from a 4-0 deficit in the first set, saving break points before taking the tiebreak, then edged a second set that featured five breaks of serve.
In the first set, Yamaguchi raced to a 4-0 lead with breaks in the second and fourth games. Kudermetova pulled back with breaks in the seventh, ninth and eleventh games to lead 6-5, but Yamaguchi broke back in the twelfth game, forcing a tiebreak. Kudermetova won the tiebreak to take the set. In the second set, Kudermetova broke for 2-0, Yamaguchi broke back for 3-2, Kudermetova broke again for 4-2, Yamaguchi levelled at 4-3, and Kudermetova broke decisively for 6-4.
Kudermetova’s resilience on serve stood out: she saved 5 of 10 break points faced (50%), matching Yamaguchi’s save rate. Despite nine double faults, Kudermetova won 40 service points to Yamaguchi’s 38 and edged total points won 82-75.
