Sakamoto R. defeated Vukić A. 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at the US Open, leaning on a huge serving display to settle a five-set battle. He finished with 36 aces, put 70 per cent of first serves in play and won 21 of his 23 service games.
Sakamoto edged the opener 6-4 before Vukić levelled by taking the second set in a tie-break. Sakamoto moved back in front with a 6-4 third set, and although Vukić forced a decider by winning the fourth 6-3, an early break in the fifth was enough for Sakamoto to close it out 6-4.
The standout number was Sakamoto's serving line: 36 aces and 21 service games won from 23. Vukić saved five of eight break points on his serve, but Sakamoto still converted the decisive break in the final set.
