Rublev recovered from two sets down to beat Virtanen 6-7, 6-7, 6-0, 6-2, 7-6 at the US Open, turning the match with a dominant third set. Virtanen had edged two tiebreaks before Rublev swept the third set and took control.
The opening set was tight, with two breaks apiece and a tiebreak going Virtanen's way. Rublev was unable to convert seven break points in the second set and lost another tiebreak, but he responded by converting three break chances in the third and two more in the fourth to level the match. In the fifth set he saved all three break points he faced and closed out the decider 7-6.
The match was decided by Rublev's return game: he won 75 receiving points to Virtanen's 38 and converted seven break points to two. Virtanen's 19 aces and equal 109 service points won were not enough to stop the comeback.
