1. FC Nürnberg beat FC Viktoria Köln 5-4 on penalties after the DFB Pokal first-round tie finished 1-1. Piet Scobel gave the visitors the lead in the 56th minute, but Meiko Sponsel equalised for the hosts in the 90th to force a shootout.
Nürnberg moved ahead when Scobel converted after Adam Markhiyev's assist. Viktoria Köln pressed for an equaliser and finally found it in the 90th minute, with Pascal Fallmann setting up Sponsel to make it 1-1 and send the match to penalties.
The hosts had much the better of the statistics, with 21 shots to Nürnberg's 11, six big chances to two and eight corners to seven, yet scored only once. Nürnberg's goalkeeper made four saves and the shootout went their way, sending them through at the expense of the side that created the clearer openings.
