Fonseca J. beat Van De Zandschulp B. 6-4, 7-6 in Cincinnati, sealing victory in straight sets on the back of a flawless record on break chances. He converted all three break points he created and saved four of the six he faced.
The opening set saw Van De Zandschulp break first in game three (1-2), but Fonseca hit back immediately at 2-2 and then broke to take the set 6-4. In the second set Fonseca moved ahead with a break at 3-1, Van De Zandschulp levelled at 4-3, and Fonseca won the tiebreak to finish the match.
Van De Zandschulp actually won 85% of first-serve points and out-aced Fonseca 4-2, but the match turned on the second ball: he finished with eight double faults and just 30% of second-serve points won. Fonseca, by contrast, won 70% of points against the Dutchman's second serve and saved four of six break points.
