Panna Udvardy came from a set down to beat Katarzyna Kawa 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the WTA Iasi tournament, recovering from a woeful first-set serving display to dominate the decider.
Kawa raced through the opening set, breaking Udvardy four times — including at 0-1, 1-2, 1-4 and 1-6 — as Udvardy landed only 35% of first serves. The second set was a see-saw affair: Kawa broke for 2-0, but Udvardy hit back for 3-3, only to lose serve again. Udvardy then broke at 5-5 before holding to level the match. In the third set, Udvardy broke early for 1-0 and 3-0, and though Kawa pulled one back, a decisive break at 5-2 sealed the win.
Udvardy's second-serve return was the difference in the final set: she won 8 of 9 points (88%) when returning Kawa's second delivery, after managing just 42% in the first set. She also improved her first-serve percentage from 35% to 71% in the decider.
