Burillo Escorihuela outlasted Uchijima in a seesaw three-set battle, winning 4-6, 7-6, 5-7. The Spaniard converted seven break points and saved six of the twelve she faced, edging a match where both players repeatedly broke serve.
The first set turned on a single break at 4-5 in game nine. The second set featured six breaks, including exchanges at 3-3, 4-5, 5-5, 5-6 and 6-6 before Burillo Escorihuela took the tiebreak. In the decider, breaks at 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 3-5, 4-5 and finally at 5-7 saw the momentum swing until Burillo Escorihuela secured the decisive break in the 12th game.
Burillo Escorihuela's ability to save half of the break points she faced proved crucial. She converted 7 of 12 opportunities (58%), while Uchijima converted 6 of 12 but saved only 5 of 12 (42%). Despite hitting two aces to her opponent's none, Uchijima could not hold her serve in the closing stages.
