Castelnuovo beat Tung-Lin Wu 7-5, 6-4 in Shanghai, and he did it by never once facing a break point himself. Wu made no double faults and landed 84% of first serves, but he could not hold when it mattered, converting none of his seven break chances.
The first set stayed on serve until the 11th game, where Castelnuovo broke at 5-6 and then served it out. In the second he struck early, breaking in game three at 1-2, and that single break was enough, with Wu saving four of five break points afterwards but never getting one of his own.
The standout number is Castelnuovo's first-serve return: 19 of 54 first-serve return points won (35%), against just two of 34 for Wu. Add 13 aces and 32 of 34 first-serve points won, and the margin on the big points was clear.
