Stefanos Tsitsipas fought back from a set down to beat Arthur Fils 4-6, 7-6, 6-1, 6-4 at the US Open. Tsitsipas turned the match in the second-set tie-break, then powered through a one-sided third set. He converted five break points to Fils' three and finished with 13 aces to 10.
Fils edged the opener 6-4. Tsitsipas then survived an early break at 0-2 in the second, broke at 4-5 and took the tie-break 7-6. The third set swung decisively his way as he broke at 3-1 and 5-1 to win it 6-1; in the fourth he moved ahead at 1-0, was pegged back at 1-1, broke again at 3-2 and closed it out 6-4.
Tsitsipas' serving was the backbone of the win: he won 16 of his 19 service games and 77% of first-serve points (59/77). Fils put a higher share of first serves in play (62% to 56%), but Tsitsipas created the key edge by winning 36% of return points on Fils' first serve compared to 23% the other way.
