Frances Tiafoe beat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6 7-5 in Cincinnati, taking the opener in a tie-break and then deciding the match with a late break in the second set. The American finished with three aces and one double fault, while Musetti had one ace and two double faults.
Musetti broke for 3-2 in the fifth game of the first set, but Tiafoe broke back immediately at 3-3 and closed out the set in the tie-break. In the second set Tiafoe moved ahead with a break in the third game; Musetti levelled at 5-5, only for Tiafoe to break again in the very next game and hold to seal it 7-5.
Musetti saved four of five break points he faced in the first set, yet it was Tiafoe who came up with the decisive response after being broken when serving for the second set at 5-4. He broke straight back and then served out, finishing with three aces against Musetti's one.
