Hurkacz beat Tabilo 6-4, 7-6 in Montreal, leaning on a first serve that won 80% of the points behind it. He hit 13 aces to Tabilo's four and outpointed his opponent 67-60 overall.
The opener was a constant exchange of breaks: 1-0, 1-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 4-4 and finally 5-4, which Hurkacz turned into the set. The second set followed a similarly wild path — breaks at 0-2, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 2-4 and 3-4, then 5-4, 5-5, 6-5 and 6-6 — before the tiebreak went Hurkacz's way.
Tabilo had the edge on second serve, winning 61% of those points to Hurkacz's 44%, but that was not enough against 13 aces and a first-serve points gap of 80% to 62%.
