Kalieva opened with breaks in games one and three to lead 3-0, then added another at 6-1. Stearns hit back in the second set, breaking at 1-2 and again at 2-5. The decider turned when Kalieva broke at 3-1, Stearns answered at 3-2, but Kalieva broke again at 4-2 and held to finish.
The standout number was Kalieva's first serve: she won 68% of first-serve points to Stearns' 38% and fired six aces to one. She also rescued three of five break points in the second set to keep the match within reach.
