Shubladze beat Soboleva 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 at the US Open, recovering from a first-set tiebreak defeat on the back of four breaks of her own. She was the steadier player on the key points, saving 12 of the 13 break points she faced.
Soboleva edged the opener in a tiebreak after the pair traded breaks, with Soboleva breaking in game four and Shubladze replying in game seven. Shubladze then took control of the second set, breaking in games four and six to level the match. In the deciding set, the key break came in game three and she closed it out from there.
The standout number was Shubladze's service hold rate: 11 of 12 games. Soboleva won more return points, 42 to 25, but could convert only one of her 13 break points.
