Juan Pablo Varillas defeated Timofey Skatov 6-4, 6-4 in San Marino, closing out each set with a late break. The result was built on a clear first-serve edge and timely saves under pressure.
Skatov broke in the opening game of the first set, but Varillas hit back in game two and again in game four to lead 3-1. After trading breaks, Varillas held to go 5-2, and although Skatov cut the gap to 5-4, Varillas broke in game ten to take the set. In the second, Varillas moved ahead 2-0, Skatov levelled at 4-3 with a break, and Varillas answered by breaking in the final game for 6-4.
Varillas finished with six aces to Skatov's one and won 65% of points behind his first serve, while Skatov won exactly half. Skatov edged the return stats overall, but Varillas' stronger serving day and five saved break points in set two proved decisive.
