Shelton beat Fonseca 6-3, 7-6 at Montreal, taking the second set in a tie-break. Return pressure made the difference: Shelton won 33 return points to Fonseca's 16 and took 43% of points on Fonseca's first serve.
The first set turned on a string of breaks from game 3 through game 7, with Shelton breaking again in game 9 to close it out 6-3. Fonseca then moved ahead 3-0 in the second set, but Shelton levelled at 3-3 by game 6; the breaks kept coming until 6-6, after which Shelton won the tie-break.
The standout number was Shelton's 33-16 edge in return points won. He also hit five aces to Fonseca's none, and though Fonseca won more service points overall (42-38), Shelton's returning carried him through the deciding set.
