Romeo Aigbekaen put the visitors ahead on 62 minutes, finishing from Bennit Bröger's assist. Timo Bornemann doubled Fortuna Köln's lead in the 89th minute, and Amin Farouk's goal for Verl in the 90th minute proved only a late consolation.
The red card changed the shape of the match. Fortuna Köln struck twice at crucial moments, and Verl were left with too little time to build on Farouk's stoppage-time reply.
