Sakkari came from a set down to beat Montgomery 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the US Open. Montgomery ran away with the opener behind a strong serving display, but Sakkari turned the match around with her returning in the second set and carried that into the decider.
Montgomery broke in games three and five, and although Sakkari pulled one break back, Montgomery broke again in game seven to take the first set 6-2. Sakkari fell 0-3 behind in the second, then broke to make it 2-4 and 4-4 before closing the set with another break at 7-5. In the third she broke to lead 3-1 and sealed the match with a break at 6-2.
The key number was Sakkari's return: she won 38% of points against Montgomery's first serve in the opener, then 50% in the second set. Montgomery's first-serve rate also dipped to 57%, and Sakkari made the most of the openings to complete the comeback.
