M. Hontama swept H. Sakatsume 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the WTA 125K Vancouver, powered by a relentless return game. The Japanese broke Sakatsume six times out of 11 opportunities while facing only three break points herself, saving one.
Hontama stormed through the opening set with three consecutive breaks to lead 5-0, then closed 6-2 after a single rebreak by Sakatsume at 5-1. The second set featured a flurry of breaks — six in total — with Hontama breaking at 1-0, 2-1, 4-1 and 5-2 to seal the match.
Hontama won 31 of 50 return points (62%) and never double-faulted, while Sakatsume committed two double faults and managed just 15 return points won. The gulf in return efficiency decided the contest: Hontama won 19 of 37 return points on first and second serve combined.
