Rybakina beat Gauff 5-7 6-2 6-2 in Toronto, recovering after losing a tight first set to dominate the final two sets. The key was a sharp rise in Rybakina's return game, which turned the match decisively in her favour.
Gauff took the opener 7-5 with the only break of the set, in game 12, and saved all three break points she faced. Rybakina levelled with a five-game run, breaking in game five at 2-3 and game seven at 2-5 in the second, then repeated those breaks in the decider to win 6-2.
Rybakina's returning stood out: 41 receiving points won to 22, plus five aces and just one double fault compared with Gauff's six.
