Independiente Santa Fe beat River Plate on penalties to reach the quarter-finals of the Sudamericana. The match had finished 1-1 after Sebastián Driussi's 52nd-minute opener was cancelled out by Franco Fagúndez's equaliser in the 80th minute.
River Plate controlled the match, keeping possession and creating numerous chances, and the breakthrough came when Gonzalo Montiel set up Driussi to score. Santa Fe had offered little until Fagúndez's unassisted equaliser, which set up the shoot-out and a decisive 8-7 win for the visitors.
The box score underlines River Plate's dominance: 72 per cent possession, 31 shots and an expected-goals total of 2.58. They still only finished with one goal, though, while Santa Fe's goalkeeper made eight saves and their four shots on target included the equaliser – the difference between going through and going out.
