Alexei Popyrin rallied from a set down to beat Grigor Dimitrov 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 at the US Open. The match turned in the second set, where Popyrin broke at 1-3 in game four and again at 3-5 in game eight to level.
Dimitrov took the opener 6-3 with the only break, coming in game six at 4-2. Popyrin hit back in a back-and-forth second set, losing his own serve at 2-3 in game five before closing it out with the second break. He then pulled away in the third set 6-2, breaking in game five at 2-3 and game seven at 2-5, and opened the fourth with a break in game one at 0-1 before closing 6-4 despite a late Dimitrov break in game eight at 3-5.
The first-set numbers favoured Dimitrov: he won 92% of first-serve points (12/13) and hit four aces to Popyrin's two. Yet Popyrin saved 2 of 3 break points in that set and did not double-fault, keeping himself close enough to take control once the breaks started going his way.
