Diana Shnaider defeated Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-3 in Toronto, taking control with three breaks of serve and a spotless serving record. Shnaider won all eight of her service games, saving three of four break points she faced.
Shnaider edged the opener with the only break of the set in the eighth game, moving ahead 3-5 before serving it out. In the second set she broke for a 2-1 lead, Pegula replied immediately, but Shnaider broke again for 4-3 and closed the match with a final break in game nine.
The match was decided on return points against the second serve: Shnaider won 62% of those points, 10 of 16, while Pegula managed only 35%. Overall, Shnaider outscored Pegula 57-47.
