Jessica Pegula came from a set down to beat Emma Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the US Open, turning the match around with her returning: she won 53 receiver points to Navarro's 41 and converted five break points to her opponent's four.
Navarro controlled the opener, breaking in the very first game at 0-1 and again at 2-3 and 2-5 to take it 6-3, with Pegula managing only one break back at 2-2. The second set swung on the closing game, where Pegula broke at 6-4 after an earlier exchange of breaks at 3-1 and 3-2. In the decider Navarro broke first at 1-2, but Pegula struck straight back at 2-2 and again at 4-2 to move clear.
The third set was the clearest evidence of the shift: Pegula saved five of six break points (83%) while Navarro saved only one of three, and Pegula won 21 service points to Navarro's 12. She also hit four of her six aces in that set, having run off four games in a row, her longest streak of the match.
