Alexandra Eala came from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in Washington, turning the match around with relentless first-serve pressure. She won 83% of points behind her first serve (33/40) and broke Pegula three times in a one-sided final set.
Pegula edged a tight opener, breaking in game 5 to lead 3-2 and again in game 9 at 5-4, with Eala levelling at 3-3 in between. Eala forced a decider by breaking in game 10 to take the second set 6-4, then ran away with the third, converting breaks in games 2, 4 and 6 to seal a 6-0 win.
Pegula fired four aces and saved three of six break points, but Eala's returning proved decisive at key moments, including the lone break that settled the second set. Eala dropped serve only twice all match while winning 10 of her 12 service games.
