Paul broke in the seventh game of the opener, and the score moved to 3-4, before he closed out the set 6-4. In the second set he broke immediately in game one, but Royer hit back at 5-5 in game ten; the set then went to a tiebreak, where Paul edged it 7-6.
The match turned on Paul's composure under pressure: he saved all five break points he faced in the first set and eight of nine overall. Royer finished with seven double faults to Paul's four and lost the total points 85-88.
