Naomi Osaka beat Panna Udvardy 6-2, 6-4 in Toronto, with the decisive edge coming from her serving and returning. Osaka converted four break points to Udvardy's one and won 83% of points behind her first delivery.
Osaka raced through the opener, breaking in the third game for 2-1 and again in the fifth for 4-1 before closing out 6-2 with a run of five games. Udvardy erased an early 0-2 deficit in the second set, levelling at 2-2 with a break in the fourth game, but Osaka answered with the key break in the seventh to go up 4-3 and served out for 6-4.
Osaka's serve was the standout stat: nine aces, none from Udvardy, and 83% first-serve points won. Overall she outpointed Udvardy 62 to 45, saving two of three break points she faced while converting four of six.
