Naomi Osaka came from a set down to beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Washington. Osaka converted five break points and out-aced Cocciaretto 9-1, while Cocciaretto managed four breaks of her own.
Cocciaretto broke twice in the opener, including to lead 4-3, and took the set 6-4. Osaka broke in game two of the second set, Cocciaretto pulled a break back to trail 3-4, and Osaka took the set with another break in game ten. In the decider Osaka broke in game two, Cocciaretto answered to 1-2, and Osaka's break at 2-4 sealed the match.
Osaka's serve was the biggest single edge: she put just 50% of first serves in, yet won 71% of points behind that delivery and 42% of points on Cocciaretto's first serve. She finished with nine aces to one, won ten service games to eight, and edged total points 86-78.
