Gauthier Onclin outlasted Timo Gentzsch 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the first round of the Tampere Men Singles, a match decided by the Belgian’s clutch serving. Onclin saved all six break points he faced, while converting four of his 13 chances on return.
Onclin dominated the first set, breaking at 2-1 and 4-1 for a 6-2 lead. The second set swung wildly: Gentzsch broke first at 0-2, Onclin replied immediately at 1-2, then broke again at 3-2. Gentzsch forced a tiebreak with a break at 5-5 and claimed it to force a decider. In the third, Onclin saved three break points across his service games and broke decisively at 5-3 to seal the win.
Onclin’s stat line was built on resilience: he conceded no breaks despite Gentzsch firing seven aces and winning 68% of first-serve points. The Belgian’s 100% break-point save rate and superior second-serve play (63% points won) proved the difference.
